Wine
Le Marche’s pride is Verdicchio a quality, delicate white wine which is world renowned. Excellent reds are the new seasons Novello only available in Nov/Dec/Jan.
Try the rich Rosso Conero and Rosso Piceno and the delicious intensely scented Lacrima di Morro d’ Alba. You can drink excellent wines at low prices.
Joy, anyway, is not only to be found sipping bottled vintages but also in the enthusiastic quaffing of young local wines.
These still living brews are liable to dramatic alteration at the mere changing of the moon and are barely able to withstand a journey from cellar to table! Yet often a delight by their distinct personality and the honest price. You will not go far wrong by simply sticking to the vino della casa – the house wine – Bianco for white and Rosso for red.
Food
Cooking is deeply rooted in peasant traditions; here the home cook rather than the professional chef rules. The use of fresh, top quality produce, assembled with the minimum of fuss, marks central Italian food. As with any rural diet, much use is made of food gathered from wild fungi, game, nuts, field herbs and truffles – nothing is wasted.
Our typical local restaurant serves a 2 course meal, normally a pasta course followed by a meat course, including half a litre of housewine for 13 euros; that’s too much for us. So we have 2 plates (piatti) and 1 meal. Fresh fish restaurants abound in Sennigalia and you can enjoy a ‘real’ pizza in Pongelli which is only 5 minutes away. Just thumb through the “house-book” for more recommendations.
